Star Route .Com

Basic FONT Tags

This is your default font. Chances are, it is a medium sized Times New Roman, colored black. This text is most likely aligned to the left side of the page, with no tab indent. Most browsers allow you to set your choice for default fonts.

You can alter the font by specifying attributes in a font tag. If you view the source code for this page, you will see the tag . The text in this section should appear in the Tahoma font if you have that installed on your computer. If you don't have the Tahoma font, it should appear in the Arial font. If neither of these fonts are installed on your computer, the font face will be your default font. This font tag must be closed eventually, with the tag . It is important to remember when specifying the font face that person viewing your page will only see the font face if they have it installed. Listing a second or even third choice of font face gives you a greater degree of control over how viewers may see your page.

Font Size can be changed by specifying the actual font size, which runs from 1 to 7, or by changing the relative font size. The actual font sizes are:

Font size 1
Font Size 2
Font Size 3
Font Size 4
Font Size 5
Font Size 6
Font Size 7

You can change the relative font size by using tags to make it LARGER or SMALLER . You can change more than one size at a time, by using +2, -3, etc in your font tag. Again, remember to close the font tag when you want the size to go back to the default font size.

You can change the color of your font by using either color names or hexadecimal numbers. Examples of this are Red by color name and Red by hexadecimal number. I find color names much easier to work with, and rarely use hexadecimal numbers for fonts. Hexadecimal numbers do allow subtle variations in color, which can be helpful if you are trying to match your font color to a particular background or other page element. There are many hexadecimal color charts available in various locations around the Internet.

Other useful font tags include BOLD and ITALIC. There are many other text tags, which you can find in more advanced HTML tutorials. The important thing to remember is always close your tags to return to the last font in use. Also remember you can always save text as an image (such as the Star Route .Com logo at the top of this page) if you want to use a specific font or larger size. This will take longer to load, however, and will not be seen by text-only browsers, so be sure to use "alt" atributes in your image tags.
